Why was Reggie in the story?
From the Short Story The Curse by Andre Dubus
The central conflict in the story is an internal one. Mitchell has a conflict between his inaction versus his definition of honor. The conflict represents his struggle concerning the guilt he feels over not attempting to stop the rape. (The conflict is unresolved.) Reggie was drinking Too Much. Mitchell had to shut him off. Shutting off Reggie demanded from Mitchell an act of will. This was Mitchell's act of "repentance" for doing nothing to stop the rape. It was his "act of will" to compensate for his lack of action during the rape. The limited omniscient point of view relates to the central idea, which is man is responsible for defining His Own sense of honor. Reggie provided the means for Mitchell to "define his sense of honor" by stopping him from drinking himself into a disaster when he was unable to stop the rape.
